Raw Thoughts: A Font with Soul for Branding

There’s a moment in every branding project when you open a blank brand board and feel the weight of the task ahead. That’s when I first tested Raw Thoughts. It wasn’t just another font—it was an invitation to bring authenticity into the design process. As a brand designer, I’ve seen countless typefaces come and go, but Raw Thoughts stood out for its raw, unpolished charm.

A Typeface That Feels Like a Journal Entry

Raw Thoughts is a slim, hand-drawn script font that captures the essence of a personal journal entry. It has that irregular, organic flow that feels like it was scribbled by hand—imperfect, expressive, and deeply human. The slenderness of the strokes gives it a delicate yet confident presence, making it ideal for projects that need a touch of personality without being too flashy.

I used Raw Thoughts on a logo concept for a local boutique that wanted to reflect its artisanal, community-driven vibe. The font worked beautifully, adding warmth and character without overwhelming the overall design. It felt like the perfect match for a brand that values individuality and storytelling.

Testing Raw Thoughts in Real Projects

To truly understand a font, you have to use it in real-world scenarios. I tested Raw Thoughts across several branding assets: a logo draft, brand board, packaging mockup, business card, website header, and social media layout. Each time, the font brought something unique to the table.

On a café visual refresh, Raw Thoughts added a friendly, approachable feel to the menu typography. It paired well with a clean sans-serif body text, creating a balance between casual and professional. For a skincare product brand, it worked as a headline font, drawing attention without being too bold or distracting.

When applied to a bakery packaging label, Raw Thoughts gave the design a handcrafted look that matched the product’s artisanal nature. On a handmade shop branding project, it helped reinforce the brand’s identity as something personal and genuine.

Where Raw Thoughts Shines and Where It Might Struggle

Raw Thoughts is best suited for display purposes—headlines, logos, short phrases, and decorative elements. Its elegance and uniqueness make it a standout choice for creative studios, small businesses, and independent brands looking to stand out in a crowded market.

However, it’s not the best choice for long body text or formal corporate use. The thin stroke weight can make it less legible at smaller sizes, and the irregularity of the script may not suit all design contexts. If you’re working on a website with extensive body copy, consider using Raw Thoughts only as an accent or headline font.

Font Pairing and Design Flexibility

One of the strengths of Raw Thoughts is its versatility in pairing. It works well with both serif and sans-serif fonts, depending on the desired aesthetic. For a more modern look, pair it with a geometric sans-serif like Montserrat or Futura. For a classic, elegant feel, try it alongside a serif like Georgia or Cinzel.

In a creative studio identity project, I used Raw Thoughts as the primary logo font and paired it with a minimalist sans-serif for body text. This contrast created a visually engaging design that communicated both creativity and professionalism.

The font also includes a range of styles, alternates, ligatures, and swashes, which add depth and variety to your design work. These features are especially useful for social media graphics, posters, and editorial design where visual interest is key.

Practical Tips for Using Raw Thoughts

Before committing to Raw Thoughts for a client project, always test it in different contexts. How does it look on a shop sign? Does it read clearly on a product label? How does it perform at small sizes on a business card?

Also, check the commercial font licensing details. Ensure that the font is suitable for print-on-demand products, websites, digital templates, and any other materials you plan to use it for. Some premium fonts have specific restrictions that could affect their usability in a broader design context.

If you’re working on a web design project, consider the webfont availability and performance. While Raw Thoughts is a premium font, its availability in webfont formats makes it accessible for online use without compromising quality.

Finally, remember that typography is part of a larger design language. Use Raw Thoughts thoughtfully, ensuring it aligns with the brand’s voice and visual identity. When used correctly, it can elevate a design from good to unforgettable.
